Sala’s Camp

The Keekorok Honeymoon Safari Tent, or Tent 1, is the furthest away from the central camp and the most secluded, and is reached via a bridge over the Keekorok River. This is perfect for honeymooners and couples seeking that extra bit of privacy and peace. All tents are designed with soft colours to embrace the natural hues of the surroundings, bamboo floors and natural reed carpets, an en suite bathroom with a separate shower, and a private plunge pool and large outside deck for tranquillity and relaxation.

Also included in each room is free WIFI, complimentary and handmade Kenyan toiletries, a safe for valuables, a cotton dressing gown and slippers, swimming towels, a hairdryer, insect repellent, a yoga mat, two-way radios, a torch, fleece ponchos and umbrellas, jackets and wellies.

The Keekorok Family Tent, or Tent 2, was built in 2016 to specially cater to families or large groups. This tent is right on the corner where the Keekorok stream and Sand River meet and is reached by a small crossing over the Keekorok River. Two generous en suite bedrooms are interconnected by a communal lounge area that is ideal for socialising and private dinners. Both bedrooms can accommodate a double bed, or twin or triple single beds so up to 6 guests can stay at one time.

The Family Forest Tent, or tent 3, can accommodate up to 5 guests, ideal for families and larger groups. Two en suite bedrooms are divided by an open-plan shared lounge, and each bedroom can fit either a double bed or two twin beds, with an extra bed available on request. There is a small and shaded grassy area in front of the tent that would make a great space for children to play. Here, the private deck is but a stone’s throw away from the Sand River, with great views looking southwards towards Tanzania. There’s also a good chance of being visited by some friendly mongoose who love to sunbathe by the tent.

Sala Camp’s Double Tents, tents 4-7, are spread out along the riverbank in the other direction to the Keekorok Honeymoon Safari Tent, with Tent 4 being closest and Tent 7 being the furthest and most secluded. Guests can choose between a double bed or 2 twin beds. Tents 4 and 5 are wheelchair-friendly, and each Double Tent is spacious enough to accommodate another bed for a child.

All meals and drinks are provided for guests at Sala’s Camp and the staff work around their guests’ schedules and requirements. The verandas outside each tent are perfect for a little al-fresco fine dining. The communal area hosts ‘an impressively large dining table cut from a single piece of fallen East African Rosewood found on Mount Kenya’ as well as the camp’s “watering hole”, filled with a selection of teas, coffee, water, fruit juices and a fully stocked bar that guests can help themselves to whenever. There is ample seating, a cosy firepit where guests can relax with a drink and socialise, and a mongoose-inhabited lawn that chefs will use for special BBQ nights!

Game drives are at the heart of the safari experience. The surrounding area is bursting at the seams with diverse wildlife and your professional guides can’t wait to tell you about the plants and animals you’ll come across. All vehicles are equipped with blankets, ponchos, sun cream, cold drinks, hot drinks, books and sweets – everything guests could need for a totally sublime safari.

Soar above the savannah while the sun rises and gaze as far as the eye can see over the plains. During the Great Migration there’s no better way to truly appreciate the grand scale of wildlife on the move.

Guided nature walks with the camp’s expert birding guide are a great way to mix up your safari experience

The dry months are a great time to turn the sandy riverbed into a pitch for boules and volleyball. The camp provides all equipment so guests need only bring themselves!

Either in a quiet corner of the camp or the comfort of your tent, guests can indulge in a range of spa treatments to soothe away any stress. Sala’s Camp uses products by ‘Healing Earth, a premium organic brand inspired by ancient African healing traditions, as well as Cinnabar Green, a natural range of products using organic essential oils grown in the foothills of Mount Kenya.’

A small but fully equipped gym, including weights, a rowing machine, cross trainer and fitness mats, is available for guests to use throughout their stay.

There are all sorts of fun things for youngsters to get up to at Sala’s Camp – they might like splashing about in the shallow riverbed, spotting animal tracks on nature walks, roasting marshmallows and searching for nocturnal critters with torches. The guides at the camp can even teach them how to make Maasai bows and arrows and how to make a fire in the traditional Maasai way.

Each guest staying at Sala’s Camp pays a conservation fee that goes towards the essential running costs of the Maasai Mara and is also’ distributed among local communities bordering the reserve, creating an enduring link between conservation and development.’

Sala’s Camp has the privilege of being located in a rhino sanctuary. For every guest staying per night, a small donation is given to the sanctuary, who provide essential protection to the highly threatened species. In 2019, $14,000 was raised for the Mara Rhino Rangers!

Pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world and are at risk of extinction.

The Pangolin Project is unique in East Africa and strives to promote awareness of what is happening to pangolins throughout Kenya. A research team is based as Sala’s Camp because Sala’s Camp is fortunate enough to have higher populations of pangolin than any other camp in Kenya. The Pangolin Project relies on donor funding and a donation can go such a long way to supporting their work in protecting this critically endangered species.

Sala’s Camp works closely with the Mara Cheetah Project and Mara Lion Project. They track and monitor movements and sightings of Big Cats, then pass on their findings to conservationists, who can develop the best solutions to ensure these populations are protected.

TEAMtalk is a project run by Sala’s Camp with the aim of combining sport and education to ‘encourage the empowerment of girls and young women’. Female oppression still persists strongly in parts of Kenya that deprives women and girls of education, opportunities and even their autonomy. The project is run in the local schools and enhances sport to successfully facilitate workshops that raise vital awareness of these issues.

Every visitor to Sala’s Camp is given a reusable metal water bottle to reduce the amount of plastic waste. Through this measure, plastic waste has been reduced by 85%!

Sala’s Camp uses solar energy to supply electricity and heating, and this has reduced their electricity use to almost nothing. All power and water use is carefully monitored and time switches help to reduce power consumption.
