Copa de Arbol

Copa de Arbol has 11 different types of cabinas that guests are welcome to stay in. These cabinas are nestles among the trees and are constructed using recycled materials and reforested wood such as Teak, Cypress and Melina. An indigenous Costa Rican architectural theme is maintained with the amenities of a modern hotel and are custom made by hand. These buildings are integrated into the landscape as they maintain the beauty and natural footprint of the coastline. All of the cabinas include balconies with seating areas, pillow-top orthopedic mattresses, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers. The cabinas are within walking distance of the resort beach, 10o yards, with the rhythmic sounds of the ocean to lull you to sleep.

Each of these villas are set back in the rainforest but are still within a short walking distance from the beach with beautiful rainforest and ocean views. These villas range in size from 600 to 1000 square feet, feature a large veranda on the ground level with stairs leading to the sleeping quarters above. The upper levels in all of the villas have natural polished Teak floors, vaulted ceilings, 2 queen beds with premium bedding and extra twin beds are available upon request, air conditioning, ceiling fans, a custom hand tiled bathroom with walk-in shower, designed furnishings and front balcony seating area. The ground level open-air veranda comes with a small dining table, fully equipped kitchen and a hammock. The kitchens in the villas are stocked with basic items like salt, pepper, oil, and sugar.

This open-air restaurant is 1500 square feet in size that provides spectacular views as you sit down to dine high among the trees. Views of the Costa Rican coastline are visible from every table, so no matter where you sit, you will always be surrounded by the natural beauty Costa Rica has to offer. A variety of domestic and imported beers, wines and spirits are available at the bar that sits in the restaurant and the specialty resort cocktails are also available to order so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Meals within the restaurant are made from the freshest native fruits and vegetables, seafood, meats and poultry, freshly baked breads, desserts, smoothies and specialty coffees. The staff are highly experienced in culinary to ensure the meals are of the highest quality but also to fit into a balanced, nutritious an health-conscious lifestyle. Special Diet and Vegetarian meal plans are also available so no one leaves hungry. Copa de Arbol is an all-inclusive resort so each guest is treated to 3 full meals a day which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Park

Copa de Arbol offers day hikes to the park with guides who will accompany you as they are experienced and knowledgeable of the local area. During the hike you may come across a wide variety of wildlife which includes the Baird’s tapir, jaguar, puma, scarlet macaw, toucans, howler monkeys, two-toed and three-toed sloths, hummingbirds, capuchin monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and much more. Hikers may even be able to spot dolphins and humpback whales during the boat ride along the coastline depending on the season.

San Pedrillo Station

Guests are picked up from the Copa de Arbol beach to board the boat which will take them on a 30 minute ride to the San Pedrillo ranger station in the park. Guests will have the opportunity of spending a day hiking along park trails and stream beds, whilst a guide points out the different types of wildlife as guests take photographs. A picnic lunch will be provided at the station and there will also be a stop at a waterfall in the rainforest where hikers can take a swim in its refreshing waters.

La Sirena Station

The Sirena Ranger and Biological Station is one of the largest 4 stations in the Corcovado National Park and is situated within the Corcovado Basin. Guests are picked up from the Copa de Arbol where they will board a boat for a one hour journey to a beach near the Sirena Station. Guests have the opportunity to spend the day hiking along trails and stream beds within the park as the guide explains the different types of wildlife that can be found. A bag lunch is provided with a short rest at the station and the hike is usually on fairly flat ground but sometimes the guides will take guests on trails that are not open to the public: these are more challenging so the guide will assess the group before undertaking the challenging trails.

Underwater Ecosystem

There is good to excellent visibility in the reserve all year round which can reach up to 80 feet during the dry season months of December through to April. Underwater landscape of caves, cliffs and canyons are provided by the island’s reefs which are home to 19 species of  coral which includes brain, head and sea fans; there is also 60 species of molluscs, lobsters, giant conchs, white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, parrotfish, sea urchins, octopus, starfish and much more.

Getting to Cano

Copa de Arbol offer guided snorkel and scuba trips to the island where experienced and knowledgeable guides will accompany guests. The boat ride to the island takes 45 minutes and guest can spot resident dolphins, pelagic fish and other sea mammals as the warm waters around the Osa and Cano draw in a variety of different wildlife. The day consists of  snorkelling, a picnic lunch on the beach and leisure time to explore, swim, sunbathe and relax.

Leaving directly from the hotel, the trail to Rio Claro follows the coastal path to a Rio Claro river that feeds into the ocean. Once reaching the river, the trail continues down the coastline past pristine beaches and the tropical forest until it ends at the river mouth. Here, guests can relax in the cool waters of the river after the hike which is suited to all level of experience whether that be beginners or more experienced hikers.

Mangrove Tour

There are half and full day tours are available which both offer a wide variety of opportunities to see the jungle lined beaches, small coves some of which are only accessible by boat, river mouths and estuaries. Guests also have the chance to explore the maze of canals and rivers that flood the largest untouched mangroves in all of Costa Rica. There are nearly 100 species of birds, including the endemic mangrove hummingbird, that reside within the mangroves.

Wildlife Thrives in the Mangroves

A large variety of wildlife can be found in the mangroves including Caimans, crocodiles, tree frogs, boas, iguanas and river turtles. Guests are also likely to spot mammals such as howler, squirrel and white- faced monkeys, as well as sloths and Coatis. The mangroves provide nurseries for fish and shrimp so they are important to the region’s ecology.

Drake Bay is widely considered to be one of the best places in the world for dolphin and whale watching as it attracts wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. Over 20 species can be found in the warm, clear waters off Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula including large resident populations of spotted, common, rough-tooth, battlenose and spinner dolphins. There are also migrating populations of beaked, pilot, fin, orca, false orca, blue and humpback whales who go to these areas to mate and breed.

What to Expect

Copa de Arbol offer guided dolphin and whale watching tours and guests will be accompanied by guides who are experienced and knowledgeable. It can’t always be predicted where the dolphins and whales will be located but sightings of them are frequent and the best months for these sightings are in August through to November.

Horseback Riding on Rio Claro Beach Drake Bay Costa Rica

Explore the surrounding area of Copa de Arbol on horseback along an extensive trail system running along pristine beaches and heading into the jungle. Observe the beautiful waterfalls as you head deeper into the rainforest or take a leisurely trip along the beach to Rio Claro, a freshwater lagoon that awaits your arrival.

Jungle Canopy Tour

Experience a whole new perspective from high up in trees among the canopy and take on a new meaning of birds-eye view. This tour features 9 platforms, 6 traverse cables, one spanning over 600 feet, 3 Tarzan swings, one rappel, a 100 foot hanging bridge and a 65 foot high observation desk at the edge of a picturesque river bend. The tour is located in the town of Los Planes which includes a short boat trip and a 15 minute ride down a bumpy road to get there.

Experience the rainforest at night when the nocturnal animals make the forest come alive and explore the different types of wildlife you wouldn’t find during the day. Starting at the Copa de Arbol beach, guests will head into the jungle, accompanied by guides who will take you along the trails and explain the different types of creatures spotted along the way.

With over 800 species of birds in Costa Rica, this is the perfect location for bird enthusiasts; there are over 350 species of birds indigenous to the Drake Bay area and Corcovado National Park which are especially rich with numerous species including the Scarlet Macaw, Chestnut-billed Toucan, Orange-chinned Parakeet, Woodpecker and Tragon. This tour takes place on the grounds of Copa de Arbol, lasting for a duration of 2-3 hours or guests can take part in the full-day birdwatching tours into the Corcovado National Park.

There are 0ver 70 registered world records within 60 nautical miles of the bay and has a reputation for providing some of the world’s best sport fishing. The year-round residents within the bay are Spanish and Sierra Mackerel, Snapper, Grouper, Triggerfish, Cabrilla, Jacks and Roosterfish, all of which inshore anglers will look for. The offshore anglers will look for Sailfish, Striped Black and Blue Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Wahoo. There is a good chance of finding Snook and Corvina in the mouth of the Sierpe River.

Hiking Tour to La Danta

This hike is half day tour, 30 minutes from Drake Bay and situated within the 2500 square kilometres of the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. Here is the small community of Los Planes, bordering the Corcovado National Park that hikers have the opportunity of exploring the diversity and beauty of the primary forest. Guests have the chance to explore trails full of diverse vegetation and animals as they cross though the primary and secondary forest. Spot animals such as white-faced monkeys, peccaries, coatis, guatusas, tapirs, sloths and a variety of birds such as scarlet macaws, toucans, hawks and hummingbirds. Coming to the end of the trail will lead you to a natural pool near a waterfall where guests are welcome to swim in the inviting waters. Finish the day with a spread of delicious Costa Rican food in an outdoor kitchen accompanied by a Tico family.

Sunset Boat Cruise

Guests have the opportunity to explore the shores on one of the Ponga style boats, ranging from 22 to 28 feet, and take a ride out into the waters. The journey starts from the beach, adventures around Drake Bay and San Josecito Beach whilst having a chance to spot ocean wildlife along the way.

Enjoy a casual, do it at your own pace activity and be dropped off at the location of your choosing as you enjoy the walk back to the beach if you wish to do so.

“Jobs equal conservation. After 20 years on the Osa Peninsula, we have gained a deep understanding of the challenges that the local people face. It is through this understanding that our approach to conservation is based. The people that built Copa De Arbol are the same people that greet you upon arrival at the beach. Minor, one of the head carpenters, is also the owner of the horse tour company. If you take a bird-watching tour, a former hunter could be your guide. If you choose to embark upon a dolphin or whale adventure, former long-line fishermen may be your guides. Through these means, your visit becomes much more than a vacation. It becomes a lasting contribution to the Osa Peninsula, its natural history and its people. It creates jobs in an area where hunting, fishing and slash/burn agriculture were once the only options. With each guest’s visit, we move closer to our goals which include: provide boats and guards to protect marine reserves in order to stop illegal fishing, provide and donate basic supplies to the park rangers, donate supplies to local schools and even create educational programmes which help teach conservation awareness, support a local conservation initiative in which hunting equipment are sold or traded in for cameras and photography courses to help protect local endangered wildlife, while at the same time offering a means for the former hunters to help provide for their families.
