Every one of the 23 spacious, airy bedrooms has a king-sized bed, which can be converted to a 3/4-bed set. The kitchenette equipped with Smeg appliances and cooking utensils supplies guests with the equipment to make their own meals, or they can help themselves to the pre-stocked minibar. In the en-suite, guests have a choice of a separate bath or shower to pamper themselves with the Botanical-infused Africology amenities. After that, they can cosy up in their complimentary robes and slippers, or enjoy the cool air conditioning on warm summer nights if not outside enjoying the city sunset from the veranda.

Each of these four rooms is ideal for families or groups of friends, with two modish en-suite bedrooms connected by a living room and kitchen area. This suite can be laid out for younger children, including the addition of baby cots, and filled with little touches to make family stays easier.

This tour gives a very personal and authentic look into life in the townships and begins with a stop in at the MCT-supported Injongo Educare Crèche, Mfuleni. Guests can help to make or serve the children breakfast, and read, play ball and have singalongs with them. This is followed by a short walk down the road to where the crèche began at the home of inspirational founder, Mavis Ngcongolo who will be there to greet the group.

Then it’s on to the township of Khayelitsha where guests can see the whole of Cape Town’s biggest location from Lookout Hill at the Tourism Centre, before taking a drive through the streets, hearing about its history and people as they go.

The tour’s last stop is Langa (meaning ‘sun’) and arguably Cape Town’s most vibrant and progressive settlement. Here, guests visit Langa Heritage Museum in The Old Pass Court building, Guga Sthebe Arts & Culture Centre for local empowerment, and Langa Quarter where the Ikhaya Le Langa project is furthering social enterprise and creating a tourism hotspot.

With its cultured city set to stunning natural landscapes, Cape Town City Bowl has no shortage of available adventures. Tours and excursions can be arranged through MORE Family Collection reservations, and must be pre-booked. Below listed are the standard tours and excursions offered, but personalised and family-friendly experiences can be organised at guests’ convenience.

Guests join a half-day tour of the city to see the sights, experience modern-day Capetonian life, as well as that of bygone eras on visits to historical treasures. They can look forward to summiting Table Mountain by aerial cable car; exploring the 17th century Castle of Good Hope; sampling regional Indian, Chinese, and Turkish street food at the Eastern Food Bazaar; having koeksisters for desert from a Grand Parade square stall; to mention but a few exciting activities.

Guests greet the dawn or toast the end of another spectacular day with a picnic laid out just for them at this vantage point over the city and sea. Their MORE Guide will show them the best views and photo opportunities, and the kitchen will prepare a snack box and guests’ choice of beverage. Subject to additional costs.

With an extraordinary concentration and diversity of flora, variety of fauna and unique geology, the mountains are best explored on foot. Guests explore the peaks with certified mountain guides, who will ensure they have a safe and memorable experience.

Cape Town is a melting pot of cultures, producing a rich and varied food scene. Guests take a half-day tour to sample the local flavours, and hear stories of the traditional and historical origins of the different cuisines. They are invited to try every kind of fare from shisa nyama (buy and ‘braai’ – or barbecue) to a home-cooked Malay meal.

From city halls to smoky underground clubs, Cape Town has an ever-growing live jazz scene, which showcases both well-known artists and the best up-and-coming talents. Guests get into the groove on an evening tour to visit a renowned jazz musician at their home for dinner, learn more about jazz music and culture, and either visit a second artist at their home for a nightcap or head to a jazz venue for the late set.

The island, with a 500-year history, is a symbol of the human spirit’s triumph over adversity, suffering, and injustice. Guests set out by ferry from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for a half-day tour of the island. The tour route includes: the graveyard for victims of leprosy; Lime Quarry; freedom fighter Robert Sobukwe’s house; Bluestone quarry; arm and navy bunkers; and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africa’s anti-apartheid freedom fighters were incarcerated. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell.

As part of MORE Family Collection’s dedication to giving meaningful, long-term support to our local communities, we assist Mfuleni’s Injongo Educare Centre, which provides a loving environment of support and protection for young and vulnerable children. On this half-day excursion: guests visit the centre to engage with the children; tour the township to learn more about life here; and on the return trip to the hotel, stop in at the District Six Museum dedicated to a vibrant community forcibly removed during apartheid.

Guests visit the top sights on this full-day tour through some of South Africa’s most scenic countryside. Included is a stop at Hout Bay to sample freshly-caught fish at Mariners Wharf Restaurant. Guests can also take an optional boat trip out to see the seals of Seal Island. The tour then continues, via Chapman’s Peak, to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and the tip of the peninsula, Cape Point. Then it is on to Boulders Beach to visit the colony of African penguins. On the return trip to Cape Town, guests pop in at Kalk Bay’s Cape-to-Cuba bar for cocktails and to see the trains chug past, and at Simon’s Town to indulge in fresh West Coast mussels at Bertha’s Restaurant. The final stop, before returning to the hotel, is Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, where taking afternoon tea at the Kirstenbosch Tea Garden is highly recommended.

Guests visit the historical towns of Stellenbosch (wandering through the Slow Market on Saturdays and Blaauwklippen Family Market on Sundays) and Franschhoek. They will be treated to a minimum of three wine tastings at some of the Cape’s most renowned estates, and can take a cellar tour (on request) at Delheim Estate, Babylonstoren farm, or Waterford Estate (wine and chocolate pairing is also offered here). An eventful day ends with Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate’s Runner Duck Parade – the amusing daily ritual of a flock of Indian Runner Ducks waddling back from the vineyards, where they assist with natural pest control.

Guests experience two of Cape Town’s most popular attractions on this full-day tour. Each year, Southern Right whales migrate from the Antarctic to the Cape’s warmer coastal waters to calve and nurse their young. Stopping off along the ‘Whale Route’, including on the unspoilt coast of Kogelberg Nature Reserve, guests will be treated to displays of their breaching theatrics. The Cape offers, arguably, the world’s best land-based whale watching. Later, guests move on to the Wine Route to enjoy a minimum of two wine tastings in either the Elgin or Hemel-en-Aarde Valleys, a wine and chocolate pairing at Creation Wines, plus a beer tasting and brewery tour at Walkerbay Estates Birkenhead Brewery. The day ends looking out to sea, sundowner in hand, at Bientang’s Cave – a unique restaurant built into a natural alcove at Walker Bay.

After the return of the winter rains, the Cape sees its landscapes burst into colour with the flowering of wild daisies by their millions. It is, arguably, the greatest flower show on earth. Guests witness the spectacle on this full-day tour up the coast, through the strandveld of the West Coast National Park, and onto the coastal town of Langebaan, before stopping in at Darling’s Darling Brew for a craft beer tasting on the return journey.

MORE Family Collection is “committed to promoting conservation through education and raising awareness.”

One of the ways this is achieved is by being active members of programmes such as Nakavango Conservation Programme, a volunteering program which gives its volunteers the opportunity to “learn about and make personal contributions to: conservation management and research on the reserve, community development projects, and the maintenance of Nakavango Conservation Centre and its sustainable green operations.” The main aims are to help protect and preserve the Victorian Falls Private Game Reserve and to develop the nearby Woodlands Village.

In addition to this, MORE Family Collection have founded a field guide college called NJ MORE Field Guide College, which is endorsed by the ‘Field Guide Association of South Africa’. The college helps to train new guides while creating future nature ambassadors, and has a track record of training guides with “a vast knowledge of the environment, a passion for guiding, a dedication to teaching people about our extraordinary natural heritage, and inspiring them to do their part to protect it.”

The MORE Family Collection have a range of development projects which help support the local community, with both staff and guests encouraged to get involved.

MORE Community Trust was founded in 2002 and helps local communities through self-sustainable projects and aims to uplift them through “support and access to childcare; skills development through community-based development initiatives; access to fresh water and health facilities; and developing overall environmental health.”

Ongoing projects include providing digital education through the Huntington Digital Learning Campus and creating boreholes in Huntington Village for sufficient access to clean drinking water. The “Soul Food” project accepts donations from guests to help local communities in need, and MORE also supports the Frida Hartley Shelter which homes vulnerable local women and children.

The “Get Your Hands Dirty Programme” encourages guests to help in these projects which aim to address “local needs around education, health and environment, and infrastructure.”

MORE Family Collection have a commitment to “following best practices in the employment and treatment” of their staff. Wherever possible they hire locally, make sure to pay their workers and contractors fair wages, and create opportunities as well as “embracing diversity” and inclusivity. Support partners such as Mistral Medical help promote the health of their staff.

Energy use in buildings and transport is minimised, and and effort is being made to shift towards renewable energy sources. MORE Family has:

• Installed solar PV energy systems at Marataba Mountain Lodge and their Johannesburg Support Office to reduce their dependence on grid electricity and diesel generators
• Managed vehicle movement and monitored driving behaviours to further reduce unnecessary emissions
• Implemented the ‘Eldo App’ to monitor and manage electricity use
• Become conscious of what kind of wood is burnt in bomas, fire-pits or during bush-breakfasts and dinners, and how much to ensure minimum carbon emissions
• Committed to tracking their carbon footprint monthly

Water use is minimised, while quality is maintained, meaning that:

• Water consumption is monitored daily
• Many MORE properties use greywater systems to irrigate the landscapes to minimise the use of potable water
• Leaks are attended to immediately
• Rainwater harvesting is installed at Cape Cadogan and More Quarters in Cape Town
• Water awareness programmes for staff are being rolled out

Waste is reused and recycled, minimising the amount of waste and landfill.

• All MORE lodges and hotels have responsible waste management and recycling systems implemented
• Hazardous materials such as batteries, light bulbs and ink cartridges are responsibly removed
• Purified water is bottled on-site to minimise use of single use plastics
• Food suppliers are encouraged to reduce their plastic packaging and at Lion Sands Game Reserve their major food supplier delivers in reusable crates, with the minimum amount of plastic

Guest and staff food is healthy, local, seasonal, vegetarian-forward, ethically sourced and culturally relevant.

• Moves have been made towards a group-wide “farm-to-table” menu, and a fully functional vegetable garden has already been implemented at Stanley and Livingstone Boutique Hotel. Other properties seek out local farmers for fresh produce
• Their Group Sustainable Food standard requires all commonly regarded “unethical” foods such as veal and fois gras are avoided, and sustainable seafood sourcing is required
• Plans are in place to strengthen their vegan offerings across all their properties

Materials employed in the buildings, (construction and FF&E) and operations meet sustainability criteria.

• Sourcing of local materials is maximised to promote the local economy and to minimise the environmental impact of transportation, with an aspiration to limit supply chain to within a 50km radius wherever possible
• Their Responsible Procurement Policy includes a focus on the ‘end of life’ of materials to assist with following sustainable practices – for example being fully recyclable in South Africa
• Environmentally-friendly cleaning materials and amenities are in place throughout their properties
• Plastic straws have been eliminated, single-use plastic reduced and only sustainably sourced wood is used

Conservation projects safeguard biodiversity and the integrity of the ecosystem.  MORE has a direct involvement in philanthropic giving for conservation-related projects.

• Safari lodges make a considerable financial contribution to ongoing reserve management projects through own funds, as well as the collection of guest conservation levies
• A successful rhino breeding programme has been run at Stanley & Livingstone Boutique Hotel, which has yielded impressive numbers of endangered black rhino
• Nakavango Conservation Programme with its volunteers from around the world, continues to actively contribute towards conservation initiatives on the Victoria Falls private game reserve
• The NJ MORE Field Guide College trains guides to be nature ambassadors who are dedicated to protecting the environment
