The private islands support educational outreach trips for a local Maldavian school, allowing them access to Niyama and visits the the Explorers kids club. Niyama also hires locally and employs native chefs at its resort, sourcing food locally and enabling local fishermen to source fish for the menu.

As well as offering trips for the local Kudahuvadhoo School to educate the students, guests who visit Niyama Private Islands resort are given the opportunity to participate in the ‘adopt-a-coral’ scheme with the resident marine biologist to enrich the natural underwater habitats and learn about the endangered reefs in the process. The aim of the tours is to inspire tourists to take away knowledge about the marine life and implement a care for the environment into their everyday lives once their holiday ends.

A series of mini documentaries has been created in collaboration with marine biologists and conservationists who do vital work that protects the wildlife and marine life across Anantara’s resorts. The videos that feature the Maldives centre round the work done to protect the coral life and sea turtles. Involving guest who visit, the video provide a further outreach of education in the work that they do and how their money is well spent in aid of such projects.

This scheme offers guests the chance to plant coral with the resident marine biologist to enrich the natural underwater habitats and learn about the endangered reefs in the process. Doing so provides guests with a certificate and follow up images to watch their coral grow and thrive long after their trip.

The sustainable straw initiative is a movement to eradicate single-use plastic from resorts. With roots in Asia, a local artist named Khamchan Yano introduced fast-growing bamboo that could be used and reused as a natural alternative to straws. As plastic is one of the main polluters of the ocean and marine life they are hoping to inspire other resorts to make the change as well as guests themselves.
