Sustainability
“We believe that our highly evolved land-based tourism concept is a positive model for the long- term preservation of the unique landscapes and wildlife of the Galapagos Islands. Our priorities are protecting the islands and its people. Since we acquired the land, we have planted over 11,000 trees. This is also an activity that we encourage our guests to do during their stay. Approx. 3⁄4 of the lodge’s main building is fitted with rain collectors and Energy panels. The panels carry water to our water treatment tanks, and provide us with around 40% of the total energy used at the lodge. We are also dedicated to the social and economic stability for the local people. We have created at least 50 permanent jobs for residents of the island of Santa Cruz. All our transport services are provided by local transport companies. Pikaia provides a teacher in the nearby school and has also paid for the repairing of the local village church roof. Additionally, we are a very proud member of the Pack for a Purpose initiative, which encourages guests to bring school supplies in their luggage as donations. The Pikaia staff will then hand out these supplies during our feast out days with the children.” – Pikaia Lodge
