Basecamp Masai Mara

Along the banks of the Talek River, Basecamp Masai Mara has made its home. Guests find their sanctum alongside this thriving ecosystem in the world famous Masai Mara. Frequent guests to the Talek River are the exhilarating copper tail and vervet monkeys of the Masai Mara, who never fail to entertain and delight with their primate wit, and invariably their indelible capacity for mischief! With over 286 species of bird nearby, guests are greeted by a symphonic dawn chorus each morning, commencing the day with the rejuvenating songs of the savannah. Guest tents are all fitted with bio-flush toilets and solar-heated safari showers, and feature a balcony overlooking the great Masai Mara reserve. King-sized or Double Twin beds come as standards in all of the basecamp’s tents, and the blend of African naturalism with carefully curated minimalist aesthetics make for a stylish and idiosyncratic inflection of the surrounding landscape.

Elewana Sand River Masai Mara

Nestled in the southern region of the 8,000km2 Greater Mara, this location sits near the Kenyan-Tanzanian border, adjoining the Serengeti and Masai Mara in one immense ecosystem. The ancestral homelands of the Maasai tribespeople are one of the most incredible ecosystems on the planet, enjoying warm temperatures year-round, with low humidity, this other Eden is a paradise for the wildlife, which includes the Big 5, 450 different bird species, and many, many more. These lush pastures attract 1.3million wildebeest and zebra each year, who migrate en masse from the Serengeti, in what has been classed among the Seven Wonders of the World. The migratory crossings of the sand river are amongst the most incredible spectacles in Africa; with such close proximity to the camp, this location is but a stone’s throw from what may be the pinnacle of safari.

Guests visiting here will get the best of both safari worlds – the vibrant Maasai Mara ecosystem and the more private 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy. The core of the camp’s ethos is the learning from and respecting of nature, where the Maasai Mara itself is the teacher. Unlike some other locations, there is a higher density of predators in the area so there is a constant reminder that the wilderness is not ours and must be respected at all times.

Richard’s River Camp was initially established as owners Richard and Liz’s “home from home” in 2006 but Richard’s family have lived in Kenya since the late 1940s and his father was involved in forming the Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy, which was where Richard grew up from the age of 3. On her various travels, Liz has brought back beautiful fabrics and furniture to decorate the camp, really giving that personal touch that’ll make guests feel right at home. The Camp offers a luxury camp experience in the heart of the Maasai Mara. With just 7 tents, it’s a prime location for those with privacy and peace and quiet in mind. A permanent water supply is provided by the Ngoyanai springs, attracting cohorts of animals to the camp’s surroundings. The River Camp is newer than its sister location, the Forest Camp, promising facilities that are more modern and contemporary.
