Heritage Le Telfair has implemented a recycling policy and separate paper, glass and plastic waste so that it can be sorted appropriately instead of going to the landfill. Additionally, they have been serving guests water from their in-house bottling plant in order to negate the need for plastic bottles and reduce the amount of waste plastic generated which can do irreparable damage to the oceans and marine life. They also provide eco-friendly soaps, shampoos and lotions for guests.

Heritage Le Telfair is working with a non-governmental organization in order to distribute unneeded food supplies to less fortunate people, and also collect cooking oils for reuse after cooking. All of these initiatives minimise waste and allow the resort to make the most out of resources.

Heritage Le Telfair has a number of regulations that help to reduce their water consumption, including dual-flush toilets which consume less water and flow regulators in the taps and showers. The resort also encourages their guests to wash bed sheets and towels only as and when needed throughout their stay to conserve water. Rainwater is collected so that it can be utilised, and the onsite wastewater treatment plant recycles water so that it can be used for irrigation.

Employees at Heritage Le Telfair receive regular training regarding sustainable development issues so that they are kept up to date and informed on any new practices that could benefit the environment and the local community.

‘Every year, we offer our teams environmental and sustainable development awareness sessions. The key players in the hotels, Directors, Human Resources Managers and Project Managers are members of an environmental committee. Our first green ambassadors are therefore our employees, who themselves relay their personal commitment to their loved ones. As for Bis Lamer, a mobile learning centre, it raises awareness among employees and local residents of the impact of mankind on the marine ecosystem.’

Guests are also informed about the resort’s environmental initiatives, allowing them to take part in helping to be more sustainable and furthering Heritage Le Telfair’s efforts. An example of this is that the resort will encourage guests to use more environmentally friendly methods of transportation, and a Lagoon Directory was made so that guests can easily find out more about the local marine life and biodiversity information.

Heritage Le Telfair sources regional and organic products from Bel Ombre and surrounding villages, offering guests seasonal and local fruits and vegetables to support the local community. Additionally, they favour suppliers with an eco-friendly business model and choose eco-labelled products, keeping in constant communication with suppliers in an attempt to eliminate single-use plastic packaging.

Heritage Le Telfair employs local people through their Heritage Training Academy program, allowing the communities where they operate to benefit and receive new opportunities that will support them. They also provide healthy food to families in the vicinity of the hotel with the collaboration of the Foodwise initiative, a Mauritian social enterprise that aims to reduce food waste and ensure that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are kept well-fed and healthy.

‘In 2019, Heritage Resorts partnered with Foodwise to redistribute its food surpluses to Safire – an NGO that provides street children with support, training and social reintegration services. It is the hotel suppliers who are responsible for delivering meals to the NGO when they leave the hotels in an empty truck. To date, children welcomed by Safire at the Riambel Community Centre receive a complete and nutritious meal from Heritage Resorts twice a week. Heritage Resorts also contributes to the maintenance of the site for periodic renovations and repairs.’

Heritage Resorts monitor their daily energy consumption to make sure that they do not surpass their target usage, and use energy-saving lighting and air-conditioning systems that turn off the AC units when doors are open to conserve power. Heritage Resorts also use renewable energy sources such as solar collectors which can be used to produce hot water. This clean and sustainable use of energy helps to reduce carbon emissions and the resort’s impact on the environment.

The resort uses a number of practices to help protect the surrounding landscape, such as using organic products and natural fertilisers rather than harsh chemicals in the garden, composting green waste for fertilising plants, and selecting indigenous plants for the landscape which are naturally acclimatised to the conditions. Heritage resorts also work with the local community on environmental actions and clean-up campaigns to collaboratively help maintain a healthy environment.

Heritage Resorts operate their own nature reserve in the Bel Ombre region. The Macchabée-Bel Ombre area in the South-West of Mauritius has been recognised as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) since 1977. Covering 3,594 hectares on the outskirts of Plaine Champagne, it is a protected and preserved site that is home to the last remnants of the island’s endemic vegetation.

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is accessible with a four-wheel-drive safari vehicle or through trekking on foot and experienced guides from the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation will introduce you to some wonderful marshlands, heath, tropical evergreen forest and mid-latitude forest. They will also help you identify the rare endemic bird species with exotic names such as the Echo Parakeet, the Mauritius Kestrel, the Pink Pigeon, the Cuckoo Shrike, the Olive White-eye and the Mauritius Fody.
